frequently asked questions [nick vs cn]

The Game

What is "Dangan Ronpa"?

Dangan Ronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc and its sequel Super Dangan Ronpa 2 are visual murder mystery novels. Dangan Ronpa: Another Episode is the third installment of the games and a midquel, bridging together the first and second games. Familiarity with the two games is encouraged but not required. There’s probably not going to be much of a chance of spoilers for it in Nick vs CN, but it might pop up in OOC chatter, so we at least recommend an openness to spoilers.

With the release of NISA’s English adaptation of Dangan Ronpa, we want to make it clear that for canon terminology we will be using Orenronen’s translation, since that was what the mods used for Round 1 (so Super High School Level instead of Ultimate, Monobear instead of Monokuma).

How long is this going to last?

Realistically, we’re currently aiming for about a 5-7 week period. We will not be going past 7 weeks, including the end game. 1 OOC day = 1 IC day, except for investigations and trials, which are on a 2:1 day scale (meaning: investigations and trials take place on Fridays ICly, but Friday-Saturday OOCly).

There will be no murder the first week.

Who can I app?

For Nick vs CN, any characters from shows that have aired on Nickelodeon or Cartoon Network (including Adult Swim original shows) are acceptable! This also extends to third party shows that have aired on these networks (e.g. Toonami animes, WB shows added to the CN line-up, Nick @ Nite). Due to the younger age of some of these characters, this also means we’re going to be a bit more lenient on the age cap. However, we are only accepting this if the character in question has the emotional/mental capacity to understand the mutual-killing game.

Essentially, “All Grown Up!” Tommy Pickles is appable. Please don’t bring in “Rugrats” Tommy Pickles.

Characters must also be able to communicate with each other on some basic fundamental level. While characters that are mute or don’t explicitly speak in their canons (i.e. Courage the Cowardly Dog) are appable, we strongly advise not going for a character who would be unable to communicate on any basic level. Communications/debates are large part of Dangan Roleplay, given the game's trial system and emphasis on tearing/forming bonds.

What if the character I want to play was already in a canon round?

We ask that you don’t apply for these characters out of respect for the original players (unless, of course, you are the original player or if you get permission from the original player). Should these characters get apped (i.e. Betty Grof, Simon Petrikov), they will be considered to be different incarnations from the ones in the canon rounds and will possess no memory/recognition of murder school.

What if I don’t want to play an original Nick or CN character?

Well, good news! In the spirit of Super Nick vs CN Brothers, Nick vs CN will allow up to three third party characters. There are, however, some catches to this. Namely, each third party canon (e.g. Toonami/Adult Swim animes, Nick @ Nite) has a cap of 1 character and a total cap of 5 per side.

What if my character died in canon?

Bring 'em anyway! You can either finagle it so that their last memory was seconds before they actually bit it, or just have them remember biting it and then wake up in murder school. As long as they have a solid, corporeal body that will remain solid and corporeal after their death, they're considered appable.

Do I need to reserve before I app?

Yes. We will only be processing and accepting apps that have been reserved. We also ask you submit your app with the same account you used to reserve.

Are challenge reserves accepted?

No.

I want to app but I won’t be around to reserve right away!

That’s okay! We understand people have lives outside the internet and this is why we’re allowing proxy reserves. You can have a friend post the reserve for you, we just require that you comment with a confirmation that yes, this is for you and you intend to app.

When do apps open/close?

Apps open May 20th, reserves open May 6th. Reserves will be closed after the first 10 characters for each side but if we haven’t processed 20 apps by May 25th then reserves will re-open for however many slots remain. You may re-reserve a character if you were one of the original 10 reserves who didn’t get their app turned in on time.

The game will begin on May 30th.

Can I change my reserve?

Before you submit your app, yes. Just comment to your original reserve with the change.

What if I reserve, but then decide not to app?

Because of the limited cast, we would appreciate it if you would tell us if you change your mind and decide not to app, either by leaving a comment on your original reserve or by contacting us via PM or PP. Your reserve slot will be opened again for someone else.

I made it after the 10 mark but before the mod comment!

That means you’ve made it onto our waitlist! This means if anyone drops their reserve or their app is rejected and they decide not to app someone else you will be contacted by the mods to take the reserve slot if you so wish. You also have the option, if your reserve was for Nick, to reserve for CN instead.

I was waitlisted for Round 3 and want to use my reserve on Nick vs CN!

We will be opening reserves to waitlisted participants an hour before opening them to the general public. You’ll be required to link to your Round 3 reserve. Unfortunately, if you miss the private opening or miss reserves all together, we can’t help you in that regard.

Activity Requirements

Nick vs CN’s requirements are the same as the previous rounds before it. Living characters must submit two ten-comment threads with two different characters per week. Dead characters need only comment to check-in as a formality. AC threads may come from the weekly mingle log, the body discovery/investigation log, or any player-posted logs from the check period, but since the trials have their own activity requirements they are ineligible for the activity check.

Failure to meet AC without informing the mods will result in a strike. Two weeks in a row will result in an automatic death roll. AC will go up on Sunday for the previous Sunday-Friday, and will close at 12:00 pm (EST) on the following Friday.

IC FAQ

Where am I?

Welcome to Monobear’s Home for Orphaned Bastards! We’re a privately funded house for those wayward ne’er-do-wells who have nowhere else to go. These...troubled individuals can get all the rehabilitation they need at Monobear’s Home! Or they can meet the punishment they so richly deserve! Upupupu!

Who are you?

Call me Mr. Monobear! My faithful assistants and I be watching over you lot over your stay, so you bastards better make sure to keep things interesting for me!

How did we get here?

Upupu, that’s for me to know and you to find out!

Is there a network?

Pssssh, you kids and your networks and communication devices. Do you think we're made of money?! When I was your age we talked face-to-face and we liked it! And you're going to have to get used to it too because no network for you!

What does SHSL even mean?

Super High School Level! It means your talents excel above the rest in a certain field! For example, the SHSL Athlete has broken records in multiple sports and has great potential to go on to break even more!

Students who meet such criteria are screened and selected to attend Hope’s Peak Academy, where their talents can be nurtured and brought to their full potential!

What does Hope’s Peak Academy have to do with any of this?

Eh... where do you think we're getting the money from? Actually, does it have anything to do with any of this? Don't think too hard about it.

Wait a minute, I don’t go to this school/am an adult/not human/don’t know what high school is!

Moving on

What happened to my powers?

For your own protection and to encourage your creativity, your powers have been dampened for the duration of your stay. After all, we can’t have you bastards trying to escape without following the rules, can we?

Hold on, an orphanage? Is this some kind of boring slice of life show from the mid-2000s?

Contrary to what you may think, this game isn't going to be slice of life at all! (Well maybe. A little. At some parts, if you want it to be.) Where's the spark? Where's the thrill? The excitement? How are we going to keep you kids entertained if you're so desensitized?

So we're going to liven things up a bit! You see, just going around making friends is boring, so we're going to use a cadaver-and-stick approach! If you want to leave, all you have to do is kill someone! That's right, welcome to the Cartoon Life of Mutual Killing! If you kill someone and get away with it, you get to graduate and go home.

So wait, how exactly is this Cartoon Life of Mutual Killing going to work?

You see, when a victim and a culprit love each other very much—

Wait, that's not the right story.

Starting the Sunday of the week before that death is slated to happen, your lovely and bootylicious mods will make a roll for the victim and culprit. This will effectively give the involved parties a week and some change to hammer out the details of the crime. We will proceed to contact both players, who will have until Monday at 12pm EST to check in with one of us in any way shape or form (email, PM, Plurk, smoke signals, messenger pigeon) to let us know that they received the notification and are on board for the trial. The incredibly sexy and charismatic mods will then put the Victim and Culprit in contact with one another to work out the details of the crime (note: the Victim and the Culprit are not predetermined. Two characters will be rolled and the players will decide amongst themselves which one is the Victim and which is the Culprit. This is to minimize plotting in places that will ruin the mystery). The mods will release a motive the following Tuesday in the weekly log. The players will have until the Thursday before their trial weekend to plot out their crime, so as to encourage as much detail as possible.

Friday, the dedicated and hardworking mods will diligently write the body discovery log and post it. This will be the Investigation Start. A Monobear File will be provided with a full autopsy report, which is the One Free Clue that everyone will get. The other clues will be distributed by the mod team as the log progresses, depending on the activity of the log AND what the characters are doing. There will also be a list posted that includes the number of total clues to be found, the number of clues in each location and, once clues have been found, they’ll be listed there for player reference.

As a special stipulation for this round, the murders will alternate sides. What does this mean? Well, the first week the mods will converge together under a blood moon and RNG for which side will be having the first murder occur. From then on the murders will alternate weeks until we reach a sustainable survivors’ pool. After that the two groups will be combined and endgame will commence.

Comments from the Investigation Start will be applicable toward the weekly activity check, just as some added incentive to post to it.

Another incentive is the way that the trial system works. Trial logs will be posted on Saturday, and the players will have 12 hours to fulfill the trial requirements.

What are the trial requirements?

Well, since you asked so nicely, I guess you deserve to know! On the off chance that you thirsty little fighter jets don’t ferret out the killer within the time limit, we have separate win conditions that aren’t dependent on the characters actually solving the crime. 75% of the surviving cast have to post a comment anywhere on the trial log (this does not have to be a top-level!! Threadjacking is encouraged, to create a more despairing trial atmosphere) and the opposing team will have to contribute to the vote! They may even make or break it the whole thing for their opposition! So long as they pay close enough attention that is, upupupu~.

Whether the trial requirements have been met or not, one of two possible posts will go up on Sunday or sometime Saturday night.

If the win conditions are met: Congratulations! You figured out who the killer was! Now comes the fun part – the Execution! Each execution is tailor made to the culprit in the interest of maximum justice and written out in loving detail by your caring and patient moderators. Can't you just feel the despair? The execution will be posted on the trial log, and players are encouraged to thread out the aftermath of the execution. Just remember, attacking your headmaster is against the rules, and will be punished accordingly!

So what happens if the players don't meet the trial requirements?

Ordinarily that would earn the players their first strike with no real IC repercussions. But since this is a special gimmick round and therefore not part of the greater Dangan Roleplay canon, failure to meet the trial requirements on both sides will result in Mass Execution and the graduation of the culprit.

So wait, if this round isn't part of the greater Dangan Roleplay canon, how is it going to end?

Well, that's spoilers, obviously. But what we can say is that there is an ending planned that's not just playing out the game til there's a mass execution or there's only two people left. In order to get it, however, plan to do a lot of IC legwork. A golden ending is possible but it has to be worked for to accomplish.

What happens to the characters when they die? Do I still get to play in the game?

There's only one way to find out, now isn't there? But don't be afraid of dying, because there will still be things for your character to do!

...actually, a lot of things for your character to do. You might think you can sleep when you're dead, but you'd be wrong! There's a few special things waiting for you in the afterlife that might help you and your living friends that Golden End, but... damnit, players, I'm a bear, not a spirit medium! I can't tell you what you're going to be going for!

What if my character gets rolled but I have plans for them?

Then you can opt out of the death roll! But this is only a free option once. The price of opting out of a death roll after the first murder will be three Monocoins meaning you must have three pending Monomono Machine-eligible threads in order to not die. This is partly so that if you opt out we have some guarantee that you are or have been active.

What even is a Monomono Machine?
That’s all explained here!
